Real Housewives, Tour Boats Made Rosie O’Donnell Sell Her Star Island House | Katonah Real Estate

We crazy Miamians really did scare talk show lady Rosie O’Donnell out of her Star Island house after all. In a radio interview on the Paul & Young Morning Show, Rosie admitted that tour boats constantly cruising behind her house, and the insanity of her Real Housewives of Miami neighbors, finally drove her from the island, where she had lived for 18 years. And by that she probably means the Lisa Hochstein/42 Star Island debacle right next door, although to be fair Lea Black does own on the island too.

Terry Riley Explores Miami’s Return To Its Pedestrian Roots | Bedford Hills Real Estate

In a guided tour by car of downtown Miami, Terry Riley, former top architecture curator at the MoMA in New York and one of Miami’s reigning architecture intellectuals, tells Dezeen that Miami’s pedestrian sensibility is returning to the core of the city. The historic design of downtown Miami, with its wide pedestrian arcades to guard against sun and rain are a result of the city originally being laid out in the very late 19th and early 20th centuries with the pedestrian in mind.

When businesses needed access to larger spaces, and construction with lots of glass and air conditioning became the preferred way to keep Miami’s hot climate at bay, Brickell started to boom with its tall glassy towers, windswept pedestrian plazas, and copious parking decks. Miami “lost commonsense construction with air conditioning and underground parking garages,” Riley says, noting that Miami’s present relationship to downtown, signaled in the blossoming bars, boutiques and bicyclists where there had been or continue to be boarded-up storefronts, “is completely new.”

The most spectacular evidence that downtown Miami has come back to its senses could be the enormous overhanging eaves of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the successor of the Miami Art Museum whose move to the bay front was announced four days before Riley resigned his post as director of that institution. Riley tacitly acknowledges that the museum’s prior location in the Philip Johnson-designed cultural complex failed in its mission to “serve as a catalyst” for development downtown. In fact it had been the second time Riley replaced Johnson. His old position at the MoMA was created for Johnson in the 1930s, who occupied it for years.

Getting into real estate for the wrong reasons? | Bedford NY Real Estate

The top 10 reasons to get out of the real estate business line up with the top 10 reasons to get out of any business:

  1. I am in it for the money. If you are in the real estate business because you think/know that a lot of money can be made, you are in the wrong business. Yes, it is true, a lot of money can be made, but not without the sincere professional efforts of a dedicated agent.
  2. I can make my own schedule. Yes, this is true. In real estate you can make your own schedule, but if you think you don’t need a schedule that you keep to, you are in the wrong business.
  3. It is easy work. Yeah, right! Any profession that demands as varied and deep an understanding of various types of information as real estate does is never “easy.”
  4. I am a “people person.” If you like people you just might not want to be in the real estate business. As an agent, you are directly in line for abuse when things go wrong. It is your fault and they are going to tell everyone.
  5. People like me. Well, read Nos. 4 and 3. It is guaranteed that people will not like you when you don’t give them exactly what they want, when they want it. Don’t get into this business because people like you — they won’t.
  6. I have been hired onto a good team. While surrounding yourself with like-minded professionals working at the top of their game is crucial to success, it does not dictate your personal success. You need to develop your own skills and abilities. This is your work, not theirs.
  7. I am good at marketing. We all know that marketing is crucial for a successful real estate business. Internet marketing is even more important, but if this is your only skill you will be whistling down a lonely path.
  8. I was hired by the top agency. Well, every agency says it is the top agency. Every agency has statistics that show how it is at the top of this or that. It is never about the agency — it is always about the professional.
  9. I am a hard worker. This is not everyone’s mantra, but there are agents who come into the business with a hard-working attitude. While this is important, it is more about working smart and consistently than working hard.
  10. My manager has promised to train me. Your manager’s job is to get you in the door and producing. Once you are in the door and doing some of the things you are supposed to do, the manager is off recruiting and promising to train the next recruit. Being a professional is about your goals, focus and consistent efforts. Without that, you are just another warm body paying rent to your office.

The real reason to be a real estate agent is because you love what you do. You are willing to put the time, effort and energy into constantly getting better, smarter and more knowledgable. There are far more downs than ups in real estate at the beginning. While it may not be easier, I can think of nothing I would rather do in my life.

Marketing center users can now create full display ads with contact info, photos, company logo | Bedford Corners NY Homes

When Craigslist got rid of enhanced listings in November, many real estate agents were forced to pull back on one of their main marketing channels.

The online classifieds giant prevented agents and other advertisers from including links in their Craigslist ads, and forced them to revert to plain text and fixed photos.

Now, real estate marketing software firm Imprev Inc. has come up with a workaround for agents who lost the ability to post full display ads on Craigslist when the classifieds giant changed its site specifications.

Through a new Craigslist display ad format available via Imprev’s marketing platform, agents will once again be able to create full display ads, complete with their contact information, brokerage logo, custom text, property images, and personal or team photos.

Per Craiglist’s rules, the ads will still not contain hyperlinks, but agents will be able to lay out full display ads easily, without having to use a cumbersome desktop software program, Imprev spokesman Kevin Hawkins told Inman News.

“Real estate agents were left hanging when Craigslist effectively pulled the plug on display ads,” said Renwick Congdon, CEO of Imprev, in a statement.

“Agents that use the Imprev platform can once again create engaging, high-quality display ads for Craigslist.”

Porch partners with Lowe’s just 3 months after official launch | Pound Ridge NY Homes

Porch, a 3-month-old startup that’s taking the home remodeling industry by storm, has announced a strategic partnership with Lowe’s that will equip the employees at some of the home improvement store’s locations with tools that will allow them to use the Porch network to connect customers with local professionals.

As part of the partnership, Lowe’s employees in 139 stores in North and South Carolina and the Seattle area will quickly be able to use in-store kiosks or a special mobile app to pull up local professionals on Porch who provide services that Lowe’s doesn’t offer through its installation program, and then refer those professionals to customers, Porch said in a statement. Professionals who offer such services include handymen, painters and landscapers, according to the statement.

“By partnering with Porch, Lowe’s can help our customers achieve their home improvement dreams by providing them with the confidence of knowing who their neighbors have used successfully, and benefit our professional customers by providing them greater opportunities to grow their businesses,” said Jay Rebello, vice president of new business development and corporate innovation at Lowe’s.

Porch, which is one of Real Estate Connect’s “New Kids on the Block” and raised $6.5 million in seed funding in October 2012, claims to provide data on 90 million home projects and 1.5 million professionals. The startup has obtained that data mostly through an array of private partnerships that it cultivated for a year before officially launching three months ago, according to CEO Matt Ehrlichman.

HomeFinder.com acquires Open Home Pro | Chappaqua Homes

Real estate marketplace HomeFinder.com has acquired Open Home Pro, maker of a popular iPad app of the same name that helps agents capture and keep in touch with leads gathered at open houses.

In addition to collecting open house leads, the app also helps agents determine whether a prospect is already working with another agent, allows them to set up automatic emails and notifies potential homebuyers when changes are made to a listing they’re following.

The companies claim that more than 35,000 users have downloaded the app – currently for sale in the Apple Store for $14.99 – since its launch in 2010.

Launched in 2009 by media giants Gannet Co. Inc., The McClatchy Co. and the Tribune Co., HomeFinder.com features more than 4 million listings that attract upwards of 3.4 million unique visitors a month to a network of more than 375 news sites, including the ChicagoTribune.com, Azcentral.com and MiamiHerald.com. In addition to the 130 websites operated by its owners, HomeFinder.com powers real estate search on more than 200 websites belonging to GateHouse Media through a May 2011 agreement.

HomeFinder.com also sells advertisting and provides marketing services like Open Home Pro and single-property websites to a network of 20,000 real estate professionals.

“(The app) makes something agents do on a weekly basis much easier,” HomeFinder.com President and CEO Doug Breaker told Inman News. Part of the appeal for the acquisition, he said, was the app’s high rating in Apple’s app store and its lofty volume of paid users.
