Station Plaza Bakery Opens in Bedford Hills – Bedford-Katonah, NY Patch | Bedford Hills Real Estate

The long-awaited opening of Station Plaza Bakery is here and locals were popping in all day Monday to sample the goodies offered by restaurateur Nino Camaj, owner of the newest bakery in the town of Bedford.

Chelsea Hardy, 10, and her sister, seven-year-old Kaitlyn, ogled the pastry and cookie case at length before settling on their choices: a powdered sugar donut and a mini-cheesecake.

“They couldn’t wait for this place to open,” said their mother, Ann Hardy. “We just walked down from school—I gues we’ll have to load up on vegetables when we get home,” she laughed.

The girls’ indecision was understandable. Dozens of cookies—varieties included ginger cookies, pecan bars, seven-layer bars and frosted sugar cookies—lined the display case shelves, along with cakes and muffins.

They took their treats over to the attractive seating area in the window, where six stools are available for in-house snacking. The bakery walls are awash in soft-yellow and feature framed art—two old-style European scenes and one horse print, perhaps in a nod to Bedford’s equestrian-loving demographic.

A gleaming Lavazza machine brews espressos and capuccinos to order, and coffee, tea and Snapples are available. Creamy-looking gelato from Johnny’s Gelato in Kent, NY, comes in ten flavors including mint chocolate chip and sea salt caramel. A small is $3.20, a medium $3.70 and a large costs $4.25.

Bread choices included $3 Italian loaves, crusty boules of sourdough and Italian baguettes. A bagel with cream cheese can be had for $1.50.

Camaj, 63, said he orders from about seven different bakeries to supply the shop. “I order the best products, from Arthur Avenue in the Bronx to the Rockland Bakery,” he said.

His wife, Christine, was on hand for the opening, and the counter was handily manned by Barbara Aquilino who will be working there most days.

Doesn’t he want to slow down, just a little, after a lifelong career owning 10 pizzerias and 24 restaurants—including the four-year-old-and-thriving Nino’s next door?

“I like to work,” he said. “This town, it needed a bakery, and I’m not dead yet. I like to joke, be around people,” he said.

Station Plaza Bakery is located at 17 Adams Street, across from Depot Plaza in Bedford Hills. They are open 7 days a week: 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. They can be reached at (914) 864-0829.

Bedford School Budget Passes; Chernis, Karle are Re-elected (Update) – Bedford-Katonah, NY Patch

Bedford school district residents approved the 2011-12 school budget by margin of more than two to one Tuesday, with 1,861 people voting for the proposal  and just 766 voting against it.

The $118,980,000 spending plan represents a 2.15 percent increase from this year’s budget. It also means that district officials have cleared the first hurdle in their long-term plan.

“We’re thinking of the budget as a two-year strategy and we’ve already begun anticipating the 2012-2013 budget process, because we know there are unanswered questions out there in Albany and Washington and at the same time, we have some good ideas that we are researching right now. We want to keep our focus on what’s going well, which means there will be some tough choices in the future.”

Those tough choices, which have been discussed in the past, include the possible elimination of field trips, modified athletics and after-school activities.

In the meantime, Hochman expressed his relief that the community showed overwhelming support for next year’s budget.

“I think this all about planning and communication,” Hochman said. “We have made a concerted effort to make sure our planning is as transparent as can be and that the communication is two-way year-round, not just at budget time. I think that shows in these results.

The tax levy will increase by 1.8 percent. For the tax rates, Mount Kisco will see an increase of 11.2 percent; a decrease of 3.01 percent in Bedford; an increase of 2.86 in Pound Ridge; an increase of 7.25 percent in New Castle and an increase of 3.4 percent in North Castle.

Meanwhile, voters overwhelmingly re-elected school board Vice President Mark Chernis to another term over his opponent, Richard Hooker. Chernis received 1,557 votes while Hooker garnered 474 .

Incumbent school board member Eric Karle, who ran unopposed, got 1,509 votes.

“I’m happy that the budget passed,” Chernis said. “As Dr. Hochman said, the process that the district put in place over the past two years to make sure that the community is well involved in developing the budget and that the administration is completely transparent has helped get budgets passed here and preserve programs that we want to preserve…in terms of winning the election,I look forward to serving the community for three more years.”

Karle said he looked forward to serving his next three-year term.

“It’s going to be some tough sledding, but it’s nice to know that we have three board members that have a good deal of experience plus the four board members who have a fresh set of new eyes,” Karle said.

Bedford Hills Tweeter Learns To Tweet | Bedford Hills Homes

Have you participated in a Twitter Chat? If not, you’re missing out. Twitter chats have a number of benefits, including:

  • Learning–Chats are usually focused on a specific topic. They are places where people share their knowledge.
  • Sharing your knowledge–If you like helping others to learn and grow, chats can be very rewarding.
  • Meeting new people–I’ve found some great people to follow through Twitter chats.
  • Gaining visibility and sharing your content–When your stream fills with topic-specific tweets containing a hashtag, it tends to be noticed. Chats also give you a chance to share your own and other relevant content.
  • Gaining followers–Just as I’ve found people to follow, others have followed me when we’ve met in a chat or they’ve seen my tweets from the chat.

If you’re new to chats, here’s some information about how to find and participate in them, with a few tips for getting the most out of them.

What is a Twitter Chat?

Twitter chats are discussions that happen in Twitter, via hashtags. People meet online in Twitter at a specific time and use a specific hashtag, such as #solopor or #blogchat. Usually, chats are an hour long and have a facilitator, who may provide questions that people discuss in the chat.

How do I find a Twitter Chat?

One great resource is this spreadsheet that shows Twitter Chats by subject and gives you the day, time, and hashtag, among other information.

How do I participate?

There are a few ways to do it. You can use Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, or another client, or even the Twitter UI. In a client, create a stream/column using Search to search on the hashtag. For example, if you’re participating in #blogchat, create a column based on a Search for #blogchat. If you don’t already have one, create a column for @ replies to you, as well. In Twitter, you can open Twitter in multiple windows/tabs. Do a hashtag search in one window, and use the other to view your mentions.

Once the chat starts, you watch for the facilitator to tweet the topic or questions. Then, respond by tweeting your answer and ending with the chat’s hashtag, such as #blogchat. Including the hashtag makes sure the tweet shows up in everyone’s chat search.

Another alternative is to participate through a service such as TweetChat.com or the new ChatTagged.com. You login with your Twitter handle, and then enter the chat’s hashtag in the search box. TweetChat or ChatTagged displays the chat, automatically updating as new tweets come in. They allow you to tweet and reply to tweets in the chat. Best of all, they automatically postpend the hashtag, so you don’t have to type it.

If you use TweetChat, you’ll still want open a Twitter window with Mentions displaying, so you can more easily see replies just to me. ChatTagged does this for you, displaying a separate window with mentions.

Holy crap! I can’t keep up with the conversation!

That’s ok. This isn’t like a real world conversation, or even an IM session. You won’t read every tweet in the chat. Read what you can or what catches your eye, and respond as you can. People often go off on little side threads, discussing an answer in greater detail by replying all, while using the hashtag. Keep an eye on your mentions so you can see when someone is replying to something you’ve said.

Some Tips

  • Be prepared to share links. I often open bit.ly, which I use as my URL shortener for my best posts. You may also want to open SnapBird so that you can search for a tweet you made or create a trunk.ly list of your tweets for reference. I often want to reference either something I’ve written, someone else’s blog post, or some study or research I’ve tweeted about. I open these sources so I can find content quickly.
  • Retweet other people’s good tweets. If someone says something in a chat that you think is spot on or really good, retweet it. It’s a way of recognizing people’s good comments, as well as indicating agreement.
  • Invite others. Make a point of inviting other people you know who might find the chat interesting. And consider making a general tweet out to your followers recommending the chat.
  • Participate even when the chat is over.  The chat hashtag is available for relevant tweets even after the chat is over. Sometimes, a new study or blog post comes out after the chat, that is relevant to it. Tweet the link to the hashtag. If you had a side conversation with people about the topic, @ them as well.
  • Consider summarizing the chat. Chats can be good blog fodder. You may want to summarize the consensus or tips you got via the chat, giving due credit and quoting tweets, as appropriate. Many hosts archive the chat, making it easier to reference tweets. Otherwise, you can always search the hashtag.

Armonk NY Finds Content Marketing | Armonk NY Homes

 039

We believe in content marketing and we’ve seen the results, both working on behalf of our clients and also for our own company (that oh so appetizing phrase of “eating your own dog food”). It’s one of the reasons we launched our Content Magnet service, to even more effectively present and help people understand the different aspects of content marketing. And yet, even though the word “marketing” is in the phrase “content marketing,” we’ve consistently found that forgetting about the marketing part is the biggest content marketing mistake companies make.

Typically we see things go wrong when organizations fall prey to one of these major content marketing myths:

Myth 1: Writing is easy.

Everyone thinks they can write.  Yet anyone who has lived through enough website projects knows that content development frequently causes huge delays. Folks wouldn’t dream of thinking they could design their own website just because they downloaded Photoshop.  Yet, for some reason, since everyone has Microsoft Word, writing is perceived as easy.

What’s missing in this approach is proper planning. Content marketing is no different from other marketing channels – to be successful you need to have a strategic and tactical plan centered around unified goals and objectives. Without that, even if you think the writing part is easy, it’s likely not going to be effective.

Myth 2: Once the writing part is done, I just post it and readers start rolling in.

Companies assume that (channeling my Field of Dreams voice) “If you write it they will come.”  In reality, quality content does not magically find its way into the hands of its target audience like the ballplayers from the film magically coming out of the cornfield. That’s why organizations that invest in content creation (which, as we discussed above “should be pretty easy”) get blindsided when their content marketing effort doesn’t impact traffic, lead generation or customer acquisition. They built the field, but nobody came to play.

Any content marketing effort needs to incorporate both an optimization strategy and a distribution strategy.  It’s not enough to write it, post it, and forget about it. The key is to have a cohesive optimization and distribution plan to target a qualified audience and increase each piece of content’s reach.  This is a large factor in the “marketing” part most people ignore when it comes to content marketing.

Myth 3: Let’s just keep writing and something will happen,

This follows the first 2 points – without a plan, and without optimization and distribution, it’s hard to have a solid understanding of what’s working, what’s falling flat, and how to adjust. Most organizations, even if they do some data reporting, miss the critical marketing function of analysis – the difference being what the numbers are (data) and what the numbers mean (analysis).

Myth 4: This content marketing thing sounds hard – let’s just do something with social media

10 tweets and 3 Facebook posts a week do not a content marketing strategy make.  Mike outlined this in his post Don’t Let the Social Media Tail Wag the Content Marketing Dog. As Mike writes:

“While content marketing efforts are absolutely enhanced via social media marketing, content marketing can happen without social media marketing. On the flip side, social media marketing loses a whole lot of punch without content marketing. Without content, social media marketing stops after 140 characters and only continues when you’re ready to answer the question “What’s happening?” again, or listen to someone else’s response to that question.”

Social media marketing is not only an enhancement of a content marketing strategy but, when done well, is a form of content marketing.

Keep these myths in mind and make sure you don’t make the biggest content marketing mistake – forgetting about the marketing.
