Pound Ridge NY Homes | House of the Week: Mushroom Home in Perinton, NY

Welcome to Zillow’s House of the Week. Our site is filled with information on homes for sale and apartments for rent, plus we have data on more than 100 million homes in the U.S., so lots of homes catch our eye.

This week’s home: “Mushroom House”

For sale: $1,100,000

This whimsical construction in upstate New York was custom-built in 1971 and was designed to look like a stem of Queen Anne’s Lace, but due to its pod-like structure, it is most often referred to as the “Mushroom House.”

Location: Perinton, NY (approximately 10 miles southeast of Rochester)

Architecture style: “Pod” design

Year built: 1971

Details: 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 4,168 square feet

Notable facts:

When Robert and Marguerite Antell purchased a 1.2-acre lot in the Rochester suburb of Perinton, they wanted a custom-built home that had a “natural, honest feeling” and was “informal, open and comfortable.”

Upon hearing this description of their dream home, architect James H. Johnson reportedly handed the Antells a glass Coke bottle with three stems of Queen Anne’s Lace inside, telling her “this is your home.”

The final result was a home made up of five interconnected pods, situated on a hill at the tree line, which was designed to blend art and nature.

Building five pods to sit on concrete and steel “stems” was no easy feat. According to documents from Periton’s landmark association, the builders made several failed attempts before constructing pods into two parts — a bottom to sit on the stems and a top. Both sections were made of concrete and polyurethane.

The pods are 30 feet in diameter and weigh 80 tons. Two pods are sleeping areas, the center pod contains the kitchen and sitting room and a fourth pod is a living and dining area with a fireplace. The fifth smaller pod serves as the deck. All together, the home has 4,168 square feet of living space.

While the home is unusual, what makes it more like a piece of art are contributions by several artists, including 9,000 ceramic tiles that cover the inside of the home, which were all hand-fired by previous owner Marguerite Antell.

“It’s like you’re living in art,” explains listing agent Rich Testa. “In both daylight and evening it [the home] takes on different feelings. It really is a unique house.”

Since the Mushroom House’s construction, there have only been three owners. The current owners, Christine and Steve Whitman, purchased it for $297,000 in 1999, which is 247 percent less than the home’s current listing price ($1,100,000) on the Perinton real estate market. Steve Whitman is a nephew of first owner Marguerite Antell.

The Whitmans redid much of the home in keeping in the original style, even hiring the initial architect James H. Johnson to design the great room addition.

The new great room is built into the side of the hill and is accessible from the main pod by a underground walkway lit by fiber-optic lights. It overlooks a creek, waterfall and outdoor hot tub.

Not only is the Mushroom House a local landmark, but it has been the site of several charity events. According to Testa, the current owners are planning on donating up $100,000 to Habitat for Humanity from the sale of the home and Testa will donate $1,000 from his own commission.

Pound Ridge NY Real Estate | Google+ oversharing issues – a video walk through for Pound Ridge NY Homes

Share

While watching the Facebook Announcement on Video chat I was also messing around with Google plus, reorganising my existing circles and looking forward to reorganising all my remaining contacts. Mark Zuckerberg talked about sharing and the growth that is being seen in sharing activity, did you know that there are over 4 billion things shared every day?

It got me thinking that I should perhaps stop having fun “circling” my friends and take a look at the privacy and sharing settings on Google+. If you’ve just set up your Google+ account this quick walk through should be of use, especially if you’ve been focusing on the more exciting functionality of circles and huddles.

Although Google are advising that a Google+ experience for business will be coming in this year, there may be times when showing you as an individual is appropriate and if you want to use Google+ as an individual, now is the time to become more familiar with the privacy settings as Google has confirmed this week that private profiles will be deleted at the end of July.

If you have concerns about oversharing this short video will show you the options that are available for both your profile, the things you share and for those ever popular circles.

Bedford BOE Roundup: Incumbents Return, Interim Pound Ridge ES Principal Appointed – Bedford-Katonah, NY Patch for Pound Ridge NY Real Estate

The Bedford Central School District Board of Education officially began the 2011-12 school year by picking up where it left off.

On Thursday morning, incumbents Eric Karle and Mark Chernis, who were each re-elected in May for additional three-year terms, were each sworn in at the start of the meeting. Superintendent Jere Hochman, who received a contract extension, was also sworn in. The board leadership remains the same, as Susan Elion Wollin was voted in again as president, with Chernis picked again to be vice president.

Once the board was settled, they took reorganization votes on topics ranging from board members’ committee assignments, to administrators taking on secondary roles, to school lunch prices.

Notable Items Include:

Gembka Appointed Interim Pound Ridge Principal

Unable to immediately get a suitable permanent replacement for former Pound Ridge Elementary School Principal Peter Politi, the school board voted to appoint Timothy Gembka to fill the role on an interim basis for the next year.

Gembka, who is retired, previously served as principal at Beginning with Children, a Brooklyn-based charter school. Before that, he served as an elementary school principal in Ossining.

Gembka said he is “really excited and enthusiastic about bringing my skill set and my knowledge” to the district.

The appointment came after an unsuccessful permanent principal search during the spring, in which more than 200 applicants were involved.

“I just didn’t find the right match through that process,” Hochman said in an interview.

Morrow, Shady, Appointed to Audit Committee

The board voted unanimously to appoint Erin Morrow, Bedford Hills, to a two-year term on the district’s Audit Committee, until June 30, 2013. Morrow’s background includes work at public accounting firm Grant Thornton, with risk and compliance experience.

“She’s as perfect as it gets for this job,” said Chernis.

Current committee member Amal Shady was reappointed to a one-year term, until June 30, 2012.

Teacher Evaluations, Collaborative Input, Discussed

In Hochman’s report to the board, he talked about how administrators are working behind the scenes to prepare for the new APPR mandate evaluation system for teachers and principals, which he called “consuming as it was billed to be.”

Andrew Patrick, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, noted an ongoing “constructional coaching” program among a cohort of teachers, ranging from K-12, while working with each other to improve their instruction.

Hochman Lays Groundwork for School Year District Goals

In a fashion similar to what members of the public have seen with his budget timelines, Hochman laid out a detailed presentation of what the district’s goals and objectives should be for 2011-12. The presentation, complete with elaborate and detailed examples and categories, included a description of organizational goals (those for the district, schools, departments) and personal goals (for the school board, teachers and staff). Considered organizational goals range from looking at a capital plan, to a tiered teaching model, to state of the district reports. Personal goals include working in the APPR, meeting both state and district teaching standards (for faculty), and board evaluation for the superintendent.

Hochman also noted that the district’s various committees have come up with a list of 30 possible policy change items for future consideration. They range from changing school start times, to the capital plan, to building a sense of community across the district’s elementary schools. The items on the list are not final, however, and an update will be made to the board in the fall.
