This week I’m talking to small house dwellers for an upcoming article in Mother Earth News. I’m inspired by their commitment to minimalist living, and I’m learning a lot of tips and tricks for making the most of tiny spaces. Most of all, though, I’m inspired by the obvious joy and satisfaction that living in a smaller home brings to these folks. Living in a tiny home is a choice that no one regrets. This morning, coincidentally, I received an email from Hunter Douglas with five good tips for “living larger with less.” They’re worth sharing.

1. Contain It: More items in view means the room appears more crowded and compact. Contain as much as you can in stylish storage. First, designate a spot for every belonging so that there are a few items on tables and desks. Putting small items in neutral-colored boxes or decorative bins. Line up the storage pieces side-by-side and organize books or other items by color for an orderly look that, along with uncluttered surfaces, makes the room feel more spacious.

2. Furniture that Fits: Replace large, overstuffed furniture with trim, tailored pieces more in scale with the space. Place the heaviest piece in the room, whether a couch or a chest, along a wall to save space. To create balance, position another weighty item across from it. Place smaller furniture pieces such as chairs diagonally in corners to not only look inviting, but to open up the room. Find something the eye can focus on when entering: a beautifully dressed window or unobstructed view, piece of art, decorative mirror or well-kept fireplace. Lastly, invest in as many multi-tasking pieces as possible, like a coffee table that doubles as seating and also has built-in storage or a compact drop-leaf table that opens up to a desk or dining table.

3. Lighten Up: Mirrors can act as virtual windows to enhance the light a room receives. Hang them so they can reflect something you want to see (artwork or the outdoors). Brighten the room with window coverings that make the most of mood-boosting natural light.

4. Color that Creates Space: Bold and warm hues make a room feel cozy, while light and cool tones instantly expand the space. Try light yellow, soothing soft blue or always-complimentary ivory on walls. Continue with a neutral palette for the overall design to further optimize the space. adding only a few “pop” colors and patterns on pillows, art or tabletop accessories. Keep these cooler hues harmonious throughout the home to break down walls and create a flow.

5. Divide and Conquer: Create a breakfast nook, home office or even separate bedroom with a decorative divider.

Google Docs Integrates More Deeply with Office & Box.net

For a cloud-based service like Google Docs, one of the major challenges is integrates fully and effectively with the popularity productivity mechanisms already in place. While Google does offer the advantage of innovative cloud storage and document creation options, that advantage is likely to vanish in the near future thanks to Office 365. Likely to ensure the continued lifeblood of Google Docs, Docs integration with two major services – Microsoft Office and Box.net – is being expanded.

For Microsoft Office, the partner in question is certainly not Microsoft themselves. Rather, it’s the standalone “Google Cloud Connect” software that’s tuned to Microsoft Office. While the Cloud Connect service has been around for some time, several features have been missing. One of the more prominent is now being added: the ability to open files directly from Google Docs, viewing and editing them right from Microsoft Office. You can even use a search option in the provided dialogue box to locate your target document quickly.

Box.net, meanwhile, will allow users to open their Google Docs files directly from their Box profile. As explained by Aaron Levie, CEO of Box.net, “Box’s 6 million users can easily create and collaborate on Google Docs and Spreadsheets from within Box, as well as edit the existing 50M+ Word and Excel files already stored on our platform.” Box.net hopes that the collaboration with Docs will help expedite how quickly cloud software takes over as the main way to interact with documents and files, and by choosing Google Docs over Microsoft, Box.net is making an easily observable statement about how open the cloud should be. In the Box.net press release, Levi stated, that the company is “betting that platforms built around openness will triumph over the closed, proprietary approach” – such as that represented by Microsoft Office 365.

The state legislature reached a tentative agreement to extend New York City’s rent laws, but a cloud of uncertainty still looms over thousands of regulated units affected by a 2-year-old court decision that many hoped would be addressed during the session.

Sources said there were some discussions on how to deal with the fall out from a 2009 Appellate Division of New York’s Supreme Court ruling that owners of Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village had illegally deregulated units when receiving a tax break known as a J-51. That decision, which affected thousands of apartments beyond those in that sprawling complex, left the door open to reregulating units and reimbursing tenants for overcharges. But since then, neither the courts nor state housing authorities have reached any type of agreement about how to implement the ruling. A Republican senator introduced a bill that would have allowed landlords to pay the taxes while not repaying tenants for overcharges but it failed to gain traction.

“It was a disappointment that they didn’t address the Roberts decision,” said Steven Spinola, president of the Real Estate Board of New York, which represents landlords, referring to the common name of court ruling which stems from the last name of one of the tenants, Amy Roberts, who brought the suit. “”We really think there needs to be a decision by the Legislature since the courts don’t know what to do.”

He added that the Legislature also failed to extend the J-51 program, which extends tax breaks for making building repairs and expires this December. Mr. Spinola hopes legislators will return later this year for a special session, during which the program can be extended. He added that legislators could also address the Roberts decision at that time.

Meanwhile, legislators agreed to grant some small increases in tenant protection as they extended the current rent laws. Presently, landlords can deregulate a unit when the apartment is vacant and rent goes over $2,000 a month or when a family’s income goes above $175,000 and the rent is at least $2,000 a month. Under the deal, the rent limit increases to $2,500 a month in both instances and the family can earn up to $200,000 a year.

“The agreement is much better than it could have been,” said Maggie Russell-Ciardi, executive Director of Tenants & Neighbors, a tenant advocacy organization. “Of course, it wasn’t everything tenants wanted.”

In other developments, the Legislature also agreed to extend the 421-A program which gives developers temporary property tax exemptions to build affordable housing.

“We are obviously pleased with that,” Mr. Spinola said. “It is critical to get building going again.”

6 Comments About The ShareFile Email

The following points were all covered in the screencast above, but for those that like them written out, see below:

  1. Preheader: ShareFile includes a “view in browser” option in their preheader as well as the text “ShareFile May 2011 Newsletter.” It’s a good idea to include meaningful text in the preheader as this is what will appear as the “snippet text” in some email clients such as Gmail. However, I always recommend making that text clickable. Whatever the main call to action is of the email, link it in the preheader. Then, look at your click-through and conversion metrics to see if it’s working.
  2. Subject Line: I was not able to see the subject line for this email, but I’d recommend doing an A|B test to see which subject line performs best (see Five Ideas for Email Subject Line Testing). I’m always a fan of matching the main call to action of the email with the subject line, but again, TEST!
  3. Friend, Follow, Subscribe (Social Networks): ShareFile does a nice job of making their social networking icons/links stand out. I see many marketers simply slapping the social networking icons in their email and hoping subscribers will (a) know what they are, (b) know what do to, and (c) take action. While not ideal, ShareFile does take it to the next level by at least telling subscribers what to do (Friend, Follow, etc). The next step is the why. Why should I connect with your company on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube? What’s in it for me? Learn more in our Social Sharing eBook. Note: You’ll notice that ShareFile does a better job of promoting the WHY for their social networks near the bottom of this email. Yes!
  4. Clean Look & Feel: This email is very easy on the eyes. It’s broken up nicely into different sections. Great use of white space. I’m not normally a fan of big images, but I think it works in this case.
  5. Video: I love that they included a video in the email. Remember: Do not embed video into your email as many email clients will not be able to play it. It’s always best to include a clickable image, like ShareFile does here. As an added bonus, you can also then track the click-throughs! One tip for ShareFile is to make this image/video stand out a bit more. It seemed to get a bit lost in the sidebar.
  6. Clear Call to Action: Quick. Look at the email again. What’s it about? What does ShareFile want you to do? Pretty clear call to action, right? Notice how they also provide a few different ways to engage with the main call to action – image, links, etc. See #1 above about Preheader for another way to entice click-throughs.

No organization cares about you. Organizations aren't capable of this.

Your bank, certainly, doesn't care. Neither does your HMO or even your car dealer. It's amazing to me that people are surprised to discover this fact.

People, on the other hand, are perfectly capable of caring. It's part of being a human. It's only when organizational demands and regulations get in the way that the caring fades.

If you want to build a caring organization, you need to fill it with caring people and then get out of their way. When your organization punishes people for caring, don't be surprised when people stop caring.

When you free your employees to act like people (as opposed to cogs in a profit-maximizing efficient machine) then the caring can't help but happen.
