Katonah NY Real Estate | Locals Form Group to Bring Live Entertainment to Katonah – Bedford-Katonah, NY Patch

Ask any Katonah resident to describe what they love about living in the hamlet and you’ll likely hear the words “quaint,” “walkable,” “country charm,” or even as “close to Mayberry as you can get.”

And though Katonah boasts world-class music and cultural institutions like Caramoor and the Katonah Museum of Art, what you might not hear a resident mention is “thriving music scene,” or “good options for nightlife.”

A new, grassroots organization called Katonah Live aims to change that.

“We have a community of artistic people but there is no way to showcase their talent,” said Kelly Miller, who planted the seed for the group to form. “We want to give people something to do after 6 p.m., something to celebrate the vitality of our town.”

Katonah Live is composed of individuals, business owners and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, Caramoor, the Katonah Museum of Art and Katonah Village Improvement Society. Its mission is to support and promote live artistic events in downtown Katonah for a range of audiences.

For Susan Warsaw, part of the appeal of getting involved was to create activities for teenagers in town. “This can include events planned for all ages, and for teens, who often have nothing to do,” said the KVIS co-president.

Performances could include live bands, poetry readings, “whatever bubbles up, we’ll help facilitate,” said Jennifer Cook, who is involved as the proprieter of Noka Joe’s, past chamber president, and woman-about-town. “Katonah is just a really cool community, full of vibrant people, and this will be an outlet for arts and music.”

There have been attempts to bring music to the downtown area—a music at the gazebo night was held in May, and last year, a concert was held to ‘rock the vote‘—but after police officials deemed the traffic caused by those events unsafe, and town officials informed planners about cleanup costs and insurance requirements, the group was born.

“All around us there are communities with live music—Peeksill, for example has a jazz fest—but there’s a gap here,” said Miller. “This is for people who might not have the energy to go to New York City and get home at 2 a.m. and allows us to showcase the music community that exists around here.”

To cover the costs of staging events, Katonah Live is hosting a “Community Cocktail Party and Fundraiser” this Thursday Aug. 4 from 7 p.m – 9 p.m. at Noka Joe’s in Katonah. Scheduled to perform is the Alison Shearer Trio. Shearer, an employee of Caramoor has been “hugely pivotal and a source of energy” for the project, according to Miller.

At the cocktail party, members of Katonah Live hope to raise awarenes and funds for their first major event, an outdoor concert and block party planned for Sept. 24. They’ve rented a stage the size of an 18-wheel truck, which will be parked parallel to the train tracks outside of Peppino’s Restaurant.

Four bands are already lined up: the high school band, Hot in the Pocket; the Folkadelics (who will leave the Katonah gig to make one later in Boston that night); PitchBlak Brass Band and the Drew Bordeax Group. Little Kebab House and Blue Pig ice cream will sell food to party-goers.

In-kind donations have been pouring in—cases of wine from Katonah Wine & Liquors, food from Peppino’s and meeting space and marketing services from other businesses, but cash is needed to put on the $6,000-plus show.

For more information on the cocktail party, visit Katonah Live’s website.

Katonah NY Homes | Higher Than Expected Tax Rates Approved in Katonah-Lewisboro – Bedford-Katonah, NY Patch

Homeowner tax rates approved by the Katonah Lewisboro school board Thursday night are slightly higher than the amounts projected in May.

Though the overall tax levy, which was set in May at $99,783,239, has not changed the slight increase in projected and actual tax rates are a result of a decline in overall assessed property values, according to Michael Jumper, assistant superintendent of business, who presented the information at Thursday night’s school board meeting.

The tax levy which is the total amount of money to be raised through property taxes to support the budget and tax rates are used to determine how much each taxpayer must contribute to the tax levy.

At the time of the 2011-12 school district budget passing in May, taxes were projected to increase by 1.71 percent in Bedford, 5.43 percent in Lewisboro, 7.87 percent in Pound Ridge and 7.33 percent in North Salem.

They are now set to increase by 5.79 percent in Lewisboro, 2.06 percent in Bedford, 8.23 percent in Pound Ridge and 7.69 percent in North Salem.

See the the comparison table below for a look at recent years’ tax rates.

Jumper has said that once the levy is established, the board has little control over the tax rates, which are a factor of the value a town assessor has placed on an individual’s property and the state equalization rates, said Jumper.

One reason values may decline, for example, is when homeowners go through a property grievance process. Any value lost through grievances must be made up through the tax rate.

The board approved the return of $2,254,012 in surplus funds to be returned to voters, and the use of $500,000 from reserve funds to offset the tax levy.

Reserve funds allocated to the budget include $35,000 from the unemployment reserve; $200,000 from the  retirement contribution reserve, and $265,000 from the employee benefits accrued liability reserve.

“The total sum of the taxes is the exact same number,” Jumper said. “I want the tax levy to be as low as reasonably possible. We utilize reserves to help offset the taxpayers’ burden.”

The district’s remaining fund balance is at $4,299,230, or 3.87 percent of the 2011-12 budget, which is close to the 4 percent allowed under state law.

Katonah NY real estate uses Groupon and Foursquare | Find a Katonah NY home

According to a post early this morning on the Wall Street Journal’s influential AllThingsD blog, flash couponing/daily deals behemoth Groupon is in talks with location-based services (LBS) innovator Foursquare, in which nearby coupons would be integrated with everyone’s new favorite pastime of checking in.

In an article I wrote f

or CMO.com late last year, LBS and flash couponing were two of the trends I advised marketers to watch out for in 2011.  A tie-up between the two biggest names in the business would only provide value for marketers (‘one-stop shopping’) and can drive innovation in the industry.

But the value would be for marketers of small- to medium-sized businesses – which need all the help they can get.  National retail, service, and hospitality chains have largely shunned Groupon (or perhaps, it’s the other way around), but perhaps this new alliance may change the game a bit.

Both companies have attractive, funky, irreverent branding – Groupon specifically employs 425 editors, most of t

hem journalists, to craft its cheeky pitch emails — and Foursquare’s ‘Mayor’ concept and points system, and integration with social media, can definitely benefit Groupon.

Let’s face it:  Groupon, while calling itself a social media play, only uses social media to partially market the coupon and nothing else (the good ole’ eblitz is still its core marketing weapon).  Competitor LivingSocial lives up more to its name, as you can get your coupon free if three of your friends decide to purchase the same special.

At issue is the recently announced – last Friday, to be exact – alliance between Groupon and LBS competitor Loopt, to offer Groupon Now!, or real-time alerts that flash across the smartphone screen when a u

ser is in the vicinity.  Groupon Now! is currently only available in Chicago.

How a Groupon-Foursquare tie-up will differ from a Groupon-Loopt alliance remains to be seen.  It is also unclear if there is any exclusivity, and/or if Groupon will also be approaching the other LBS providers, including Gowalla or even Facebook Places.  (Facebook launched its own daily deals service on Tuesday, April 26, 2011).

Oddly enough, Foursquare already approaches merchants for deals, known as Specials, and highlighted in orange on a user’s screen.  An alliance with the largest provider of such deals can only accelerate this effort.
