Professional marketers aim to solve this problem on a daily basis. Therefore, it’s not surprising when ordinary folks, like us, get a little confused when trying to discern it.
Before we dive in, it’s important we don’t leave out the final piece to this equation, “owned media.” This includes our websites, blogs, and Facebook pages; stuff we “own” that gives us the platform to drive and engage traffic. Everyone still on the same page? Good : )
The art of driving and engaging traffic is what brings “paid” and “earned” media into the mix, and as the media industry continues to change, it becomes more challenging to understand their purpose and differences. The team over at GroundFloorMedia in Denver did a great job of outlining some benefits and comparisons between the two:
Paid
I believe paid media is 100 percent necessary. However, each market’s competitive landscape is unique. So offering up specific strategies would not be effective for such a widespread audience.

What demise of the PC means for real estate | Bedford NY Homes
I wrote a “post-PC-era survival guide” almost two years ago. The piece was inspired by Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco where Steve Jobs declared, “We are going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device. We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud.”
I discussed how Apple, Google and Microsoft were approaching the cloud. That summer, Brad Inman, founder of Inman News, discussed the post-PC world during his keynote address at Real Estate Connect in San Francisco. He discussed how the post-PC-era was going to reshape the real estate industry and how mobile devices were projected to outsell personal computers.
Fast forward to April 10, 2013. IDC (International Data Corporation) announced that PC sales plummeted 14 percent this quarter, which is the largest decline and worst quarter recorded since the organization began tracking sales in 1994. IDC was forecasting only a 7.7 percent decline. Obviously this is much worse.
“Although the reduction in shipments was not a surprise, the magnitude of the contraction is both surprising and worrisome,” said David Daoud, IDC research director for personal computing. “The industry is going through a critical crossroads, and strategic choices will have to be made as to how to compete with the proliferation of alternative devices and remain relevant to the consumer.”

Photo: Flickr, WikimediaTwo very powerful and eco-friendly men are embarking on a new journey and taking their resources to an entirely new level. Former President Bill Clinton and Richard Branson have joined forces in helping the Haiti Forest Initiative.
Last Sunday, Clinton, Branson and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, announced their new social and environmental goal. The Haiti Forest Initiative’s mission is to solve social and environmental problems throughout Haiti. It aims to do just that by bringing sustainable, productive and socially responsible forests to the country.
“I am pleased that my Foundation is working with Yunus Social Business and Virgin Unite,” Clinton said. “Through this partnership, we hope to create a replicable model for programs that demonstrate long-term, positive social and environmental impact as well as economic benefits across Haiti.”
The project will not only bring forests to Haiti – the country lost most of its forests over the last half-century – it will provide affordable food, timber and most importantly employment for residents.
The initiative wishes to accomplish four main goals including the re-forestation of Haiti; providing sustainable livelihoods to farmers; helping mitigate Haiti’s dependency on food imports; and identifying alternative fuel sources to reduce usage of charcoal.
“This project will create much-needed economic opportunities for many and is wonderful way to do something good for our planet and the people of Haiti,” Branson said.

The Value of Local SEO to Small Businesses | Bedford NY Realtor
SEO can be challenging for small businesses. They must compete for the same market share against larger brands that often have more prestige, brand recognition, and consumer affinity.
That doesn’t mean that organic search is out of reach for small businesses as a powerful inbound marketing channel with high potential for return. In order to compete with large brands, small business owners must have an SEO strategy that offsets the often large difference in marketing budget. Because small businesses will not be able to outspend their larger counterparts on media acquisition, they must take a much more targeted and refined approach.
When it comes to short-tail SEO—general phrases with a high amount of search volume—the search engine results pages are dominated by big brands. There is little that a small business marketer with limited budget can do to change these results.
Despite various limitations, small businesses can gain meaningful search engine result real estate with a focus on areas of lowered competition. When geography is taken into account, there is often a much smaller big-brand presence in search results. That opens a window of opportunity for small businesses to gain useful organic search visibility.
