5 Tips for Attracting New Twitter Followers

Twitter is much more than just an outlet for socializing and staying in the pop culture loop. It can actually be a powerful marketing tool for your business, website, service, or brand, if you know how to use it correctly. As with most other marketing techniques, when it comes to Twitter, getting the results you want is a numbers game – the more followers you have, the greater your chances of success. For that reason, people use a variety of methods to attract followers, some more effective than others. So what works, and how can you use Twitter to grow a following? Here are five tips for attracting new twitter followers:
Customize your profile.
Don’t make the mistake of leaving your profile incomplete or bland. You need to have something catchy in the bio section, and a cool pic of either yourself, your brand logo or your avatar. For example, your bio should be unique and entertaining, so skip the boring, resume-like spiel and add some personality.
Spread your Twitter handle around.
Your “handle” is your Twitter username (@yourname), and it’s how people find you on Twitter, even if they’re not on Twitter. If you want people to find and follow you on Twitter, then your handle should be everywhere: on your business cards, in your advertisements, included in your email signature, and at the end of all your posts on other social networking sites.
Give them what they want.
No one likes being solicited for business. Remember this when you are tweeting. Don’t patronize your followers by constantly selling yourself; instead provide useful, informative, humorous, educational, interesting, or otherwise worthwhile tweets that your followers will want to share. That way you can attract new followers just by tweeting
Retweet.
When you retweet other peoples’ tweets, you are basically giving them kudos and making them visible to all of your followers. The great thing about this is that they see you’ve retweeted them, and are likely to do the same for you. Just be careful to use the retweet wisely (when it is truly warranted), or you may come off as a phony asking for a favor.
Hash-tagging events.
If you are at an event that others will be talking about, then make it a point to report on the event while you are there, marking your tweets with hash-tags as you go. That way, people who are interested in the event can search for it by its hash-tag, and will find you and your tweets.Attracting new Twitter followers will take some thought and effort, but it is well worth your time, as Twitter can be a great way for you to broaden your horizons and expand your reach.
