North Salem NY Real Estate | Now Taking Your Questions for District 2 Candidates – Bedford-Katonah, NY Patch

Election season is well underway and local candidates are gearing up for upcoming primary elections.

Bedford’s Peter Michaelis, who has received the endoresments of Westchester’s Republican and Conservative parties, is facing off against North Salem’s Lisa Douglas, who is running in the Sept. 13 GOP primary.

Both criticize the fiscal policies of incumbent Peter Harckham (D-Katonah), however, they are out convincing voters who is a better fit to oppose him.

Michaelis has stated his support for the economic policies of Republican County Executive Rob Astorino, and has called for lower county taxes. Douglas, meanwhile, has argued that Michaelis is not conservative enough, and wants to provide a contested primary. Michaelis has been endorsed by local Republican committees in Mount Kisco, Bedford, Lewisboro and Pound Ridge, while Douglas has backing from GOP officials in North Salem and Somers.

Do you have questions for your candidates? Ask them in the comments below, or email them to Lisa Buchman, Bedford Katonah Patch editor, or Tom Auchterlonie, Chappaqua-Mt. Kisco editor. We’ll include them in the questions we ask the candidates to answer in advance of the primary election.

South Salem NY Real Estate | Case Against Four Lewisboro Teens Headed to White Plains – Bedford-Katonah, NY Patch

Lawyers convened again at the Lewisboro Town Court for the last time regarding the felony charges that four teens face after being accused of painting swastikas on the home of a Jewish family in South Salem on June 9.

The four young men, Michael Trapasso, 17, of South Salem; Chris Grispin, 17, of South Salem, Daniel Mitchell, 17, of Cross River and Michael Skalaski, 18, of Goldens Bridge, signed paperwork which moves the case for adjudication to the Westchester County Court.

Grispin, Mitchell, Skalaski and Trapasso face first-degree counts of aggravated harassment and third-degree counts of criminal mischief, felonies, for their alleged actions on June 9. In addition to painting anti-Semitic slurs and Swastikas on the home of a Jewish family, the four are also accused of spray-painting graffiti of a sexual nature on a car and postal vehicles parked in Oakridge Commons in Vista, according to police.

“In lieu of having the case head to a grand jury for an indictment, attorneys and prosecutors will meet in White Plains to decide how the case will proceed,” said Lucien Chalfen, spokesperson for the district attorney’s office, on Tuesday.

The four young men also face misdemeanor graffiti-making charges, added July 12, which will proceed in Lewisboro Town Court, Chalfen confirmed. The next court date in Lewisboro is Nov. 28.

Lewisboro Town Justice Susan Simon reminded the young men Monday night that they were expected to continue to abide by a curfew while in the custody of their parents.

Skalaski, who failed to appear at the July 11th court date, now faces an additional felony charge of criminal contempt after violating the 9 p.m. curfew previously set for all of the defendants. He was stopped by a state trooper at 11:30 p.m. on July 9 and had a $600 bail charge following that incident.

Trapasso’s curfew is now extended to 11:30 p.m. on nights that he is working.

Katonah NY Real Estate | Have You Noticed the New ‘Sunday’ Sign in Katonah? – Bedford-Katonah, NY Patch

You may have noticed the shiny new signs on Jay Street and Bedford Road declaring Katonah to be open on Sundays, followed by three words: Shop, Dine, Stroll.

We’ve noticed some shops are and some aren’t. To clear up the confusion about where you can shop and dine and where you may as well just stroll, we went to the Katonah Chamber of Commerce, the organization behind the campaign to promote the village as “a Sunday town.”

“We’ve often found consumers unaware that so many Katonah businesses are open on Sundays,” said Bart Tyler, chamber treasurer. “So we’re trying to raise awareness in the hopes of making a great business day even greater.”

About 60 percent of retailers and restaurateurs are open on Sundays, according to chamber data, and more are considering the move to keep doors open a seventh day.

“For many of us, it is one of our top sales days for the week,” Tyler said. Kelloggs & Lawrence, Sgaglio’s and Katonah Wine & Liquor cite Sundays as their second or third best retail day, according to Edris Scherer, chamber co-president.

She said they hoped businesses would consider opening at a minimum from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. every Sunday, noting that Sunday shoppers are often first time visitors discovering Katonah, when they are “shopping for recreation.”

“They are more apt to impulse shop—generating a higher average sale,” she said. “Sunday is Target’s second biggest shopping day – so people do shop then.”

And for those who want to stay for more than two hours, the signs are now up indicating that’s possible without getting a ticket.

Bedford NY Real Estate | House of the Week: $29 Million FSBO | Zillow

Welcome to Zillow’s House of the Week. Our site is filled with information on homes for sale and apartments for rent, plus we have data on more than 100 million homes in the U.S., so lots of homes catch our eye.

This week’s home:House on the Hill” Tobin Clark Estate

For sale by owner: $29 million

Location: Hillsborough, CA

Year built: 1932

Details: 9+ bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, 35,000 square feet, 6-acre plot

The plan was to tear the home down and build six homes on the six acres in this section of Hillsborough real estate. But when the owner stepped inside the home, and realized the history of the place, he decided to keep it as his own private residence. The current owner has asked to remain anonymous, but he is the former chairman of a real estate development and financial consulting firm.

The estate was built in the late 1920s for divorced heiress Celia Tobin Clark. She commissioned architect David Adler to create a one-of-a-kind retreat in Hillsborough, a hilly enclave for the 19th-century rich just outside San Francisco. In the book “The Country Houses of David Adler,” author Stephen M. Salny explains that Clark envisioned an “English house that disappeared into the landscape.” Adler delivered.

The current owner picked up the property in 1991 and spent $19.4 million remodeling the home in 1992.

“We had 60 people working two shifts a day,” he recounted. “We replaced the roof, we redid the landscaping, we remodeled all the kitchens, all the bathrooms.”

The three-level home’s most unusual feature is its 55-foot long Music Room, a place that is “very good for entertaining” explains the owner. Guests have included former Presidents Ford, Nixon and Bush Sr., not to mention former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The room features three-dimensional decorations, gold-gilt moldings, bay windows and 15-foot high ceilings.

In addition, the home includes a media room, archive room, paneled library, and game room. The first floor holds the master’s quarters, executive office and V.I.P. suite as well as a staff’s wing.

Despite the house’s apparent perfection, the owner has decided to sell the home, explaining that the 35,000-sq ft estate is much too large for him and his wife.

He previously listed the home for-sale-by-owner in 2002 for $45 million but said that he didn’t get the price that he wanted.

“The highest offer was for $39 million, and the second was for $39.5 million and we rejected them both,” he said. The owner then decided to take the home off the market and hold off his retirement until this year.

He recently put the home up for sale again by owner — this time for $16 million less.

“I’m a business man and I know what the economy is like,” explained the owner. He’s also offering financing for qualified buyers: 4.2 percent interest rate with a 60 percent down payment.

And if you’re an agent, there will be a 7 percent commission paid to the broker representing the buyer.
